Morrow Audio Reference 1; Crossoverless, Dual Driver Speaker:
Presenting the Morrow Audio, Reference 1 crossoverless, dual driver speakers incorporating two eight inch, eight ohm drivers with phase plug. The drivers have been upgraded to the new version which incorporates cast frame baskets.
The Reference 1 speaker has dual drivers operating full range. There is no crossover. The first driver is mounted on the front of the cabinet. The second driver is top mounted.
The front driver provides a single point source of full range sound. The brain naturally focuses on the sound source that is nearest it, the front firing driver since it is nearest the listener. The sound will appear to come from a single point source providing excellent imaging, sound stage depth and width. The front driver is mounted with practically no cabinet edges near it, lessoning comb filter distortions and diffractions off the cabinet baffle.
Although the top mounted driver operates full range, the midrange and upper frequencies produced from it are mostly eliminated through diffraction and absorption from the ceiling and surrounding objects in the room, with only the bass frequencies reaching the listener. The bass from both drivers acoustically combine. The resulting bass response is like having a single 12" driver, moving a lot of air, but having the speed and accuracy of an 8" driver.

Being crossoverless, the speakers are directly connected to your amplifiers. Electrostatic type speed and accuracy are produced. You will notice a great improvement over conventional speakers that have crossover components which degrade the sound, impending the flow of the subtleties, tone and detail in the music you love. You will hear MUCH more...greater detail, imaging, tonal presence, etc. Hear the difference that only single drivers can produce.
Cabinet dimensions are 9" wide by 38" tall by 11" deep with 1" thick front baffles, 3/4" thick walls and back. Front baffle is painted black, all other sides are veneered. The finish is smooth with a nice wood grain appearance. High quality binding post are on the rear. Internal wiring is high grade silver coated copper with Teflon insulation. Even though the standard wiring is excellent, customers can upgrade the internal wiring to our Reference SP2 cable for $150.00.
The drivers are eight inch with phase plug. Frequency response of our "Reference 1" model is 45 Hz to 19,000 Hz. You can expect at least 98 db efficiency. It handles 30 watts continuous RMS, 50 watts peak. Impedance is 4 or 8-16 ohms, selectable. Voice coil is 1.4 inches (35.5mm). Magnet weight is 3.2 lbs. Total weight of each driver is 7.8 lbs. The cone is made of paper with tweeter wizzer cone and phase plug. The surround is accordion style and made of treated cloth.

The Morrow Audio Special Cone Treatment:
We have found that single driver speakers can be harsh and peaky in their midrange to upper midrange audio spectrum. Morrow Audio has developed a special treatment applied to the cone of these drivers. This incorporates applying 3 coats of a special formula directly to the paper cone and wizzer. This is absorbed by the paper, adding strength to it, removing the distortions and peakyness of untreated cones. The results are improvements in all areas; sound staging, imaging, speed, naturalness of tone, etc.

Hooking Up The Reference 1:
There are two hookup options allowing the best impendence matching to your amplifier. On the rear of the cabinet are two sets of binding post. The top pair is connected to the top firing driver and the bottom pair are connected to the front firing driver. These connections are isolated from each other with no common ground between them. This arrangement allows great flexibility in how you can hook up the speakers. This is accomplished by installing jumpers at various points on the binding post.
Photo shows the 8-16 ohm, series configuration.
4 Ohm Parallel Configuration: By jumping the top post + to the bottom post + and doing the same with the top and bottom - post, you are hooking the drivers in parallel, creating a 4 ohm load to your amplifier.
8-16 Ohm Series Configuration: By jumping the top post + to the bottom post -, and then using the remaining + and - post to connect to your amplifier, you will have a 16 ohm series configuration (usable on your 8 ohm amplifier).
Bi-wiring The Reference 1 Speaker: It is possible to bi-wire the Reference 1 by following these instructions:
Bi-wiring in 4 Ohm mode: Hook up the bi-wire normally as you would for any speaker with one leg going to the top 2 binding post and the other leg going to the bottom 2 binding post.
Bi-wiring in 8-16 ohm mode: This mode is not a true bi-wire hookup, you instead "double up" the bi-wire ends of your speaker cables. To do so, combine together the plus legs of your cable and also the minus legs. Hook this up as explained under the "16 Ohm Series Configuration" above.

What makes the Reference 1 speakers so good?
1. Because the drivers are FULL-RANGE. There is NO separate woofer, NO tweeter, and NO crossover. There is nothing between the amplifier and the driver.
2. Frequency Response is a wide 45 Hz to 19,000 Hz . For best result, a subwoofer is recommended with this system.
3. Clarity, detail, accuracy, and realism are unmatched because the sound comes from a single driver.
4. Imaging and soundstage are incredible because the sound comes from a single point source in space.Even though there are two drivers, the brain will detect the driver nearest it, the front facing driver, giving the same effect of a single source point. The top driver adds bass weight and some ambience to the sound. There speakers totally disappear!
5. The drivers are precision made with very light paper cones and incredibly strong magnets for precise control.
6. The "Reference 1" speakers are very efficient--at least 98 dB.
7. They present a very easy load for any amplifier. One watt flea power amplifiers will work well with this speaker. Your amplifier options are unlimited!
